The current Hampshire Jail and House of Correction replaced a small Civil War Era facility which was located in Northampton center. The institution was completed and occupied in 1985 on a site 2 miles northwest of Northampton center. The Facility was originally designed to house 148 inmates. As an aide to overcrowding in the State prison system, a 100 bed modular building was erected in 1988, increasing the total to 248.
