Common law dictates that the Sheriffs are the highest law enforcement officers within the County. The Sheriffs of the commonwealth are committed to excellence and work diligently to maintain highly trained and professional staff to support this statutory mandate.

Under Massachusetts Law, the Sheriff and his Deputies are required to serve (deliver) documents issued by the court. In the Hampshire District, this is accomplished through the Office of the Sheriff, Civil Process Division.
